HEARST, ON – A Hearst man has been fined for dredging the shore lands of Pivabiska Lake.
Leandre Lachance pleaded guilty and was fined $2,000 for contravening the Public Lands Act.
Court heard that during the summer of 2012, Lachance, after purchasing a cottage lot on Pivabiska Lake, cleared his land to build a cottage and disrupted the natural shoreline by removing trees, rocks and vegetation. Large machinery was used to remove the materials. An unstable bank was created which eventually eroded into the lake.
Pivabiska Lake is situated north of Hearst and has numerous cottages and developed shorelines. Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers investigated the incident after receiving public complaints.
Justice of the Peace Sylvie-Émanuelle Bourbonnais heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Hearst, on September 10, 2013.
The ministry would like to remind landowners that shore land is defined as land seasonally inundated by water and a work permit is required to conduct any work within the shore lands.
To report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
