MNR Northwest Region – Fire Situation Update
NEW FIRES
There were four new confirmed fires by the evening of August 22 in the Northwest Region. They were in the districts of Dryden, Kenora, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout. They were all caused by lightning.
Dryden District Fire Number 34 is a 0.6 hectare fire listed as not under control. Kenora District Fire Number 46 is listed as under control at 0.1 hectares in size. Red Lake District Fire number 65 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and Sioux Lookout Fire number 59 is not under control at 0.1 hectares in size.
There were nine new fires by day’s end on August 21 including two in the Dryden District, two in the Fort Frances District, one in the Nipigon District, three in the Kenora District and one in the Thunder Bay District.
Kenora District has two fires being monitored on Lake of the Woods in the Conservation Reserve. (Kenora 035 and Kenora 043) as they renew the ecosystem. One is located between Ferrier Island and Whiteout Island and the other is located in the mouth of French Narrows on Lake of the Woods. The fires are managed under the Lake of the Woods Fire Response Plan. They are fulfilling a natural role in the ecosystem. People are advised to avoid these areas for safety reasons.
