Odours From Wawa Sewage Treatment Lagoons
WAWA, ON – The sewage treatment lagoons are located west of the town site and consist of four treatment cells. The two cells closest to the bluff along Superior Avenue have piping installed in the bottom to provide air which assists in the treatment of sewage and also aides in odour reduction. This aeration piping system was installed approximately 30 years ago and although it has been maintained by Municipal staff now requires replacement.
The cost of replacing the aeration system will exceed one million dollars. The Municipality cannot afford to pay for the replacement without the assistance of senior levels of government. We have applied on several occasions, most recently last year, for funding assistance. Unfortunately, these applications were not approved. As a result, the Municipality has been trying to implement rehabilitation to the existing system to optimize its operation. Like last year, we have rented equipment in an attempt to supplement the aeration system. It should be noted that this system is approved by the Ministry of the Environment and was installed following discussions with the local Ministry office in Sault Ste. Marie.
The operation of this supplemental system appeared to assist in the reduction of the offensive odours emanating from th e lagoons, however in recent weeks, likely associated with the warmer weather, the problem is again occurring. We have increased the operation of the aeration system to the extent possible to assist in the reduction of odours and discontinued other activities that may have enhanced the odour problem.
Although we are operating the aeration system at its maximum capacity, the deteriorated condition of the piping is significantly reducing its capabilities and effectiveness. Staff are also investigating other options which potentially can assist in either a reduction in
formation of odours or the minimization of their impact. All complaints about this matter are logged by Municipal staff and sent to the Ministry of Environment.
We thank you for your understanding and patience.
