Northwest Region – Fire Situation Update

June 01, 2013 – 16:30

There were no new fires reported in the Northwest Region by the evening of June 1st. Rain and overcast conditions kept most of the region in a low fire hazard. The far north is in a moderate fire hazard.

There is one active fire in the region.

Nipigon Fire Number 011, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Webequie was declared under control at 210.0 hectares in size on June 1. There were overcast conditions and rain over the fire and it is displaying minimal fire behaviour.

An infrared scan of the fire is expected to begin early in the week to seek out hot spots that need to be put out completely.

Be FireSmart!

Residents that are planning on burning grass, brush or other wood debris should consider composting or taking material to landfill sites instead.  No brush or grass burning is allowed during the day from April 1 to October 31. These fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and must be put out no later than two hours after sunrise and must be at least two metres from any flammable materials. All fires must be tended by a responsible person until put out. Adequate tools or water must be available to put the fire out.

If it is windy, the risk of a wildfire is high – don’t burn!
