MARATHON, ON – It’s probably not news to most in town that the Ski Club has transitioned over to the Golf Club, but the Marathon Cross Country Ski Club (MCCSC) also held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday May 14, 2013 at St. John’s United Church, and with that, the 2012-13 Ski Season officially came to a close.

Considering the rollercoaster weather we had this winter, MCCSC had a relatively successful year. Although day use was down compared to the previous year, memberships were slightly up. The Club managed to make a small profit, which was used to pay off some outstanding debts. And more good news ~ as a result there will be no increase in membership fees for next year!

Volunteers were the backbone of our success again this year.  From trail groomers, to chalet shift workers, to parents at ski lessons, to many, many more – each and everyone played an important role in making this another great year for Marathon Cross Country Ski & Snowshoe Club.  So thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone!

The board would also like to send out a special thank you to Kim and Leslie Ransom who broke the news at the AGM that they will be moving from Marathon later this summer to Meaford, Ontario. Kim retires as Club President, a position he has held for the past 5 years, and as trail groomer, which he has done for the past 25 years. Leslie retires as club secretary, chalet manager and Jackrabbit Coordinator for similar durations.

Kim and Leslie were among the first members of the newly formed ski club when it applied to be an incorporated, non-profit organization in the mid-eighties. Both have worked tirelessly over the past 30 years to plan, develop and maintain trails, organize club events, and promote the sport of cross-country skiing and, more recently, of snowshoeing, in the town of Marathon.

Many skiers in town have learned the basics of the sport under the pair’s instruction. Having essentially built the MCCSC into the excellent club that it is today, Kim and Leslie have made an invaluable contribution to the community of Marathon.

The Marathon Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Club Board will be reconvening in June to discuss next steps and make a plan for recruiting and electing a new executive for 2013-14. Anyone interested can inquire with any of the current board members.  A reminder to check in at marathonskiclub.caCLICK HERE to visit the Club’s facebook page, and keep reading OntarioNewsNorth.com for the latest updates about the Club (during ski season OntarioNewsNorth.com features a static page offering current conditions from all the Northshore’s cross-country and alpine clubs INCLUDING the MCCSSC).
