Encouraging Youth to Become Entrepreneurs
Superior North CFDC is excited to bring the Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative (NOYEI) to the Superior North region. Our new Youth Entrepreneurship Coordinator, Travis McArthur, will be delivering NOYEI programming to youth in communities from Dorion to Manitouwadge.
The NOYEI is funded by FedNor and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. They offer a continuum of bilingual programming designed to encourage young people between the ages of 8 and 34 to explore and develop entrepreneurial qualities, characteristics, and attitudes. The programs are designed to engage youth and get them thinking about business opportunities within their communities, while having fun and promoting teamwork, self-confidence, and creativity. The mandate of the program is to encourage young people to envision entrepreneurship as a viable career option while remaining in Northern Ontario. In the last six years, more than 12,000 children have been introduced to entrepreneurship through the program.
Cindy Reasbeck, the Youth Entrepreneurship Advisor for Northern Ontario CFDCs, says “There is a gap between thinking about starting a business and those who actually do it. By starting with young children, we can plant the seed to develop an entrepreneurial culture that over time will bridge the gap between thinking and doing.”
Michael J Beno, Board Chair, says “We are very excited for this new opportunity to engage youth in entrepreneurship. Youth entrepreneurship and mentorship has been one of my core business beliefs as well as one of Superior North CFDC’s core deliverables. Travis will add great value to this program. He is a bright young man, full of positive expectations for the future of the entrepreneur. Along with his experience and education, Travis comes from a multi-generational, successful business family and that alone is a tremendous resource for this program.”
