Amazing Walkers Want Elementary Kids To Start Their Day Right!
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Media were invited to the Manitouwadge General Hospital Wednesday, as the Manitouwadge Family Health Team were excited to share news of the success of one of their Amazing Walk Segment One Pit Stops challenging participants to bring one in at least one box of cereal per team.
55 boxes of cereal were collected in total which will serve more than 600 bowls of cereal for the approximately 45-60 students/day, from Our Lady of Lourdes School, Manitouwadge Public School and Ecole Publique Franco-Manitou using the breakfast club.
The Breakfast Club, is organized by a steering committee of volunteers and the school Principals. Breakfast is available for students from all three elementary schools (EPFM and MPS students enjoy Breakfast Club together).
Those interested in contributing can donate or volunteer by contacting Doreen Sproule at 826-3291 (a Vulnerable Sector Check is required for those who want to volunteer). The Breakfast Club receives funding from the Red Cross and Breakfast for Learning, in addition to community partners, nevertheless, donations are always appreciated.
The Breakfast Club is an important role in our community ensuring every Manitouwadge elementary student has a healthy start to his or her day and the best chance to succeed at school. Studies from as far back as the 1950s have consistently shown that children who eat breakfast perform better academically than those who don’t. Evidence suggests that eating a healthy breakfast helps kids learn; after fasting all night, a developing body (and brain) needs a fresh supply of the brain’s basic fuel: glucose — or b lood sugar.
