UPDATED (+video): 5 Schools Compete at 2013 Invitational Elementary School Track Meet

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Tuesday, July 4th the sun was shinning at the Manitouwadge Community Track as elementary students from Marathon, Pic River and 3 Manitouwadge Schools gathered to compete in Our Lady of Lourdes School’s annual invitational track meat. Students competed in a variety of traditional track & field events including: shot put; broad, running long and high jump, and a variety of running distances including relays divided into 3 age divisions.  No new records were set during the meet though there were some that came very close including the boys 13-14 Relay team from OLOL; Tristan Oliveira, Dally Baril, Shawn Bell and Brady Lamont who were only 0.5 seconds from the record set in 1998 by another Manitouwadge Relay team made up of Justin MacFarling, Stephen Meagher, Chris Martin and Danny Ross.  Another near upset was run by École Publique Franco-Manitou’s 13-14yr old Girls’ Relay team on which 14 yr old Leanne Courty was the only member of age, the other 3 girls all having chosen to compete in a higher division; 11 year old Natalia MacFarlane, and 12 year olds Kaitlyn Morin and Amy Courty rounded off the team which claimed first place in the 13-14 Girls Relay.  Among the spectators, was volunteer Elaine Milks – a member of the OLOL team who set the record for Girls 13-14 Relay about a decade ago. It was a wonderful day of exemplary sportsmanship and new friendships.  Volunteers kept the kids well fed and hydrated with a BBQ table where hot dogs, hamburgers, cookies, freezies, refreshments and other treats could be purchased. Top Girl and Boy overall were both from the host school, OLOL’s MacKenzie Clark (11-12 yr old division) took the prize for TOP GIRL OVERALL as 13-14 Division Tristan Oliveira earned the distinction of Top Boy overall – CONGRATULATIONS!  Home town schools also claimed the top 2 spots for total points:  hosts Our Lady of Lourdes in 1st place with 213 points while École Publique Franco-Manitou took second with 83 points and Marathon’s Holy Saviour claimed 3rd place for total points with 65pts. CONGRATULATIONSto all the students who competed, representing their schools and communities so well!
