Terrace Bay Releases its Economic Update
The Township of Terrace Bay recently released its Economic Update which provides a snapshot of the local economy. The Terrace Bay economy has been growing significantly since the reopening of the local pulp mill in August 2012. The reopening of the mill has seen a drastic increase in hiring across many different business sectors. This has has also brought challenges as local businesses are finding it difficult to recruit employees. These challenges are evident on the job bank of the Municipal website as the page is full of vacant positions. The Municipality continues to work with its employers to identify and evaluate possible solutions to this problem. The feedback thus far has seen Terrace Bay recently initiate a Housing Opportunities Study to determine the demand for short and long-term housing which was identified as an issue by the major employers. The Municipality is also enhancing its online presence with new information on the Terrace Bay lifestyle webpage as well as updated information as to what makes the Township a great fit for relocating workers. Major benefits to relocating to Terrace Bay include: the full complement of family physicians, great schools and medical care, and beautiful natural scenery. Residents are also very proud of their emergency services, which was recently reinforced by a presentation by the OPP that stated Terrace Bay is one of the safest communities in Ontario. The economic update also shows some of the local businesses that are growing through expansions and the hiring of new staff. The Municipality has recently begun its formal business interview process where a two-member team (1-Administration, 1-Council) meets with all willing business owners. These interviews give the business owners a formal opportunity to discuss what’s happening with their business as well as an opportunity to bring forward any ideas of growth or areas of concern. The economic update not only features information on the Lighthouse festival and many other events that were held in Terrace Bay throughout the 2012 year, but also showcases what’s to come in 2013.
