Statement by Minister Zimmer on the passing of Elijah Harper
David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, issued the following statement today on the passing of Elijah Harper:
“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Elijah Harper.
Elijah Harper dedicated his life to public service and advancing First Nations issues — first as band Chief for Red Sucker Lake First Nation, then as a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and Manitoba’s Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for Native Affairs, and later as a prominent Member of Parliament.
Mr. Harper’s actions during the Meech Lake Accord united First Nations and raised awareness of Aboriginal issues among all Canadians.
Throughout his life, he was a strong voice for the advancement of Aboriginal Peoples and sought to improve relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Peoples to foster reconciliation, healing and understanding, which is something we should all strive for.
On behalf of all Ontarians, let me express my sympathies to the family and friends of Elijah Harper.”
