Flooding of White Lake and White and Michipicoten River Watersheds

Pic Mobert First Nations & area from Google Satellite.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Wawa District is advising area residents that a flood warning remains in effect for both the Michipicoten River and White River watersheds.

  • Flooding on the White River, White Lake and the Michipicoten River is ongoing.
  • Flooding is still occurring or imminent in the lower areas of Pic Mobert First Nation as well as at White Lake Provincial Park.
  • Flooding is occurring at the marina area near the Michipicoten River in Wawa, with access roads and boat launches at the marina currently affected by the high flows.
  • White Lake remains well above its upper lake summer operating level and has risen slightly due to recent precipitation.
  • The Michipicoten River and White River are both at very high flow conditions. The southern end of White Lake is now free of ice.
  •  High water levels will persist in these two watersheds until the recent precipitation passes through to Lake Superior.
  • Forest access road culverts and water crossings are at or near their flow capacity across the Wawa District.

The public is asked to exercise caution when travelling in the bush. Please stay alert to changing flow conditions. Residents along the White River and Michipicoten River should monitor the developing conditions closely. Please use extreme caution around the water at this time of the year, as water levels on streams, rivers and lakes can change quickly and the water is very cold.

This statement applies to the White River watershed, White Lake and Michipicoten River watershed. MNR is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. OntarioNewsNorth.com will publish further updates as they are received.
