MANITOUWADGE, ON – Thursday, April 4, 2013 at approximately 8:30pm the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department responded to a residential fire call at 7 Otter Avenue.  The homeowners/family were out already when the fire department arrived and fire had already spread to the attic area, Fire Chief Owen Cranney told OntarioNewsNorth.com that it is believed the fire originated from the chimney of the wood furnance.

A whopping 15 hours was spent in fighting the fire before it could be declared out.

Fire Chief Owen Cranney reminds everyone that is important to maintain your wood burning/pellet system and insure they are up to code; the municipality provides wood burning and pellet stove inspections.  Smoke alarms, says Cranney, in addition to being the law is the 1st line of defense  in fire safety as early detection of fires ensures that people can get out safe if there is a fire.

The home at 7 Otter Ave. was destroyed as a result of the fire, Fire Chief Cranney will be among those to meet with the family and decided what the next steps are moving forward.
