The Northern Communities Investment Readiness program is an effective tool that helps communities across the north to identify investment opportunities, grow their local economy and create jobs. I am very pleased that we were able to support these 26 projects." Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines
New Ontario Government Lays Foundations for Future Growth
A number of communities and First Nations in Northwestern Ontario are identifying investment opportunities that will create new jobs and grow the local economy.
With support from the Northern Communities Investment Readiness (NCIR) initiative, communities in the northwest will implement 26 projects to help them identify their economic strengths and resources while investigating areas in need of improvement. Examples of these projects include: the development of a Community Foreign Direct Investment Strategy in Dryden, the delivery of a three-day training session on basic economic development principles in Marten Falls and a business investment training session in Eabametoong. The NCIR program helps communities improve their ability to respond to investment opportunities, attract new businesses and create jobs.
Strengthening local economies is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to create good jobs for families across Ontario.
Quick Facts
- Stimulating investment in northern communities is in keeping with the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario.
- Since the program’s inception in 2006, more than $3.4 million in NCIR funding has been approved for 330 economic development initiatives across the North.
