Why Ontario Mining Safety Investigation is Needed Now

Citizens group MINES to hold information session in Timmins

Representatives from the Sudbury-based citizens group MINES (Mining Inquiry Needs Everyone’s Support) have been invited to host an information session in Timmins on March 24, 2013 on the need for an investigation into Ontario mining safety.

WHAT:  An information session on why an Ontario government-commissioned inquiry in to the Mining Health and Safety Act is needed.

WHERE: McIntyre Arena – Auditorium, 85 McIntyre Rd., Timmins, ON

WHEN: Sunday, March 24, 2013, 1 PM-4 PM

MINES Committee is urging the government to call an inquiry for the following reasons:

  • No public review or update of the Mining Health and Safety Act has occurred in over 30 years.
  • There have been eight deaths in Ontario mines since 2011.
  • Changes in workplace safety have not kept up with changes in technology.
  • Ownership of the mining sector has become international.
  • Environmental issues have been identified in workplace disease and community health from mining operations.
  • Review of relevant legislation and criminal liability in the workplace.
  • Recommendations made from inquests and investigations in previous deaths or accidents are not established as policies in all workplaces.
