MANITOUWADGE, ON – Sunday, March 17th, the Kiwissa Ski Club hosted a bonfire with free hot dogs, marshmallows and pop to enjoy at the top of the Beginner Hill adjacent to the chalet at Kiwissa Ski Centre.

Though most didn’t seem aware, this would also be there final day to ski as Community Services Director Paula McCloskey had announced, via press release the day prior, that due to the mechanical issues preventing use of the T-Bar, Kiwissa Ski Hill would be closed for the season after March 17th.

It was an interesting season at the hill as, with artificial snow making equipment sitting idle, the hill did not open until February 9th (as compared to the December opening of recent years thanks to artificial snow), however, the feeling at the hill on Sunday seemed quite clear, most skiers and snowboarder were focusing on the fact that the hill had been open throughout the March Break with great conditions thanks to significant snowfall which continued this week.

The T-Bar’s mechanical issues, we’ve been told by a long-time Kiwissa Ski Cub volunteer, are due in large part to regular wear and use (though the cable which the t-bars are on having been bouncing in the track and come off the track due, say user and volunteer reports, to insufficient snow on the t-run earlier in the season, may also have caused additional stress or wear on the mechanics of the tbar).  The bottom line: repairs are planned and if there is such a thing as perfect timing for the t-bar to be down – this must be it! Ski Hill Manager Jason Leville has spring, summer and fall ahead to order any necessary parts and make repairs to the t-bar and could, if needed, even wait for warmer weather to conduct these repairs.

In the press release sent Monday, the Community Services Department thanked everyone who has worked to make this season possible including volunteers and the Kiwissa Ski Club who managed the Blizzard Grill (for the first time in many years) and continue to offer Equipment rentals at very reasonable rates.
