NOTES FROM THE PARK: Mantha looking forward to answers in Elliot Lake inquiry
QUEEN’S PARK, ON – NDP Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha said he’s pleased the public inquiry into the roof collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake has begun and hopes the community will finally get some answers.
“The people of Elliot Lake are strong and resilient, and look out for one another,” said Mantha. “We owe it to the families and friends of Lucie and Doloris, and our community to finally get answers to this tragedy so we can make sure it doesn’t happen again. Today is the first step in getting those answers.”
Mantha said it’s important to examine both the events leading up to the collapse and after.
“We need to look at the role of the Ministry of Labour, the government’s response and communications, and the rescue operations,” said Mantha. “We need to know what contributed to the incident, how it was dealt with and what steps have been taken to protect and improve our emergency response system to prevent future tragedies.”
