FROM: Wawa Economic Development Corporation
Mining Matters, a charitable organization dedicated to bringing knowledge and awareness about Canada’s geology to youths, educators, and the general public will be participating in a public event, hosted by the Economic Development Corporation of Wawa, in partnership with the Regional Employment Help Centre, Algoma Workforce Investment Committee, Confederation College, Prodigy Gold Inc., and Augustine Ventures Inc. Mining Matters will be holding private sessions for students at Michipicoten High School and Ecole Secondaire Saint-Joseph on the 15th and 16th of April. A third session open to the general public will be held at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre, 3 Chris Simon drive, on the evening of the 16th.
The Public Open House session will start at 6:30pm and run till 8:30pm. During this session various stations will be set up with informational displays and interactive learning activities. Stations will cover topics ranging from geosciences, mineral exploration, development and operations, and careers in the mining industry to name a few. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk to local mining professionals to gain further insight into the mining industry.
Admission to event and refreshments at the event are free, there will also be a door prize giveaway sponsored by Prodigy Gold Inc.
The Economic Development Corporation of Wawa would like to see full participation from the community for the Public Open House. These events are being held to raise awareness in the region about the wide variety of career paths in the mining industry and to underline the importance that minerals have in everyday life. With two operating gold mines and one planned to begin operations in the near future, demanding approximately 4,800 direct and indirect jobs in the region, this event is a unique learning opportunity to people in the Wawa area hoping to enter into the mining workforce in the near future.
