Golden Age Centre
The Manitouwadge Diabetes Health & Wellness Program is moving our “JUST MOVE IT” Resistance Band Peer Led Physical Activity Program to the Golden Age Centre as this will allow us to have more space. We hope that you will consider getting more active and join us!
Are you unable to do many of the typical exercises recommended for being active? Do you have trouble doing exercise due to a sore back, bad knees, breathing troubles, aches and pains that limit what you can do? Then these Resistance Band sessions may be for you! This program is designed to improve flexibility, balance, stamina, muscle strength, posture, and body mechanics.
These Peer-led (Volunteer) physical activity sessions are done with a Resistance Band – like a big stretchy rubber band – and many are done from a chair! Anyone can do it – it is suitable for all ages and all abilities! Best part it is FREE! Never underestimate being with others and the power of peer support!
If you already have a Resistance Band then we ask that you please bring it! If not you will receive a band.
Benefits of Resistance Training
Resistance exercise uses more muscles than just walking & maintains or increases lean muscle. This helps to burn calories at rest throughout the day. This is important for weight control & diabetes management, especially as we age. Keeping your muscles active & healthy through regular resistance training will greatly improve your management of diabetes.
Medical Screening: Even though this strength training program is not too strenuous, some people should not participate without their physician’s clearance. Every participant should first complete the short Screening Questionnaire. Anyone who answers “yes” to any question should not proceed with the exercise program until he or she has written permission from their physician.
