Ontario has appointed Daryl Skworchinski (of Marathon) as chair of the province’s Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC).
We are looking to the corporation to become a self-sustaining business, focused on getting the most value for northerners. It will market, sell and enable access to a predictable and competitively priced supply of Crown forest resources to support jobs in the north. The forestry sector continues to be a priority for our government and is certainly central to supporting strong northern communities. We look forward to its continued growth with the creation of Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation." Michael Gravelle MPP, Thunder Bay–Superior North
In addition, Grant Goodwin (Manitouwadge), Donald Fry (Sault Ste. Marie), Raymond Boudreau (Dorion), Tina Forsyth (White River), and Gaétan Malette (Timmins) have been appointed to its board of directors.
NFMC is Ontario’s first local forest management corporation, which will help re-energize the forestry sector, create jobs and boost the economy. The NFMC will administer and oversee the sale of timber along the northeast shore of Lake Superior, and will manage four forest management units – Nagagami Forest, White River Forest, Big Pic Forest, and the Pic River Forest.
With this new model, local timber supply will be better aligned with market demand. It will also be easier for entrepreneurs, First Nations and local communities to participate in the forestry industry and will help the forestry sector grow and create jobs.
Modernizing the management of wood supply is part of the government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fair society and give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.
Tenure modernization is part of our long-term commitment to revitalizing Ontario’s forestry industry. A modernized tenure system will create new economic development opportunities for northern communities and First Nations, and the appointment of the board for Nawiinginokiima is an important step in this process.” David Orazietti, Minister of Natural Resources
