MARATHON ON – Saturday March 23, 2013 at approximately 2:25 pm, a motorist observed smoke coming from a front tire of an eastbound vehicle on Highway 17 and called the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment out of concern for the safety of the occupants.
Officers were informed that the vehicle had been involved in a collision earlier in the day near Upsala Ontario. The vehicle was located and officers spoke to the two occupants.
An investigation revealed that one male was attempting to hide his identity. The two males were detained and the driver arrested for breaching release conditions and possession of a controlled substance. Officers also located over $5000.00 in currency concealed on the driver and he did not have a logical reason as to why he had the money. The currency was seized pending further investigation.
Philip AFOLABI, 22, from Calgary Alberta was arrested and charged in relation to the incident. He was held for a remand hearing and was escorted to the Thunder Bay District Jail.
Motorists are reminded to call police if they are suspicious of other vehicles or motorists while travelling on the roads, call 9-1-1 or the OPP Communication Centers at 1-888-310-1122.
