Wawa Receives $25,000 Grant through Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund
WAWA, ON – Municipality of Wawa has been awarded a $25,000 grant through Ontario’s Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund to help improve Lake Superior’s coastal area.
The Municipality, along with area volunteers, will use the funds to replace the Stephen E. Renault Walkway Bridge which is part of the Lake Superior Coastal Trail, an important link in the provincial trail network. The repairs will restore public access and stabilize the embankment on either side of the bridge, reducing erosion and protecting water quality in the Wawa Creek.
“Congratulations to the Municipality of Wawa for ensuring that our Great Lakes can be enjoyed by all,” said Environment Minister Jim Bradley. “This is a good example of community groups coming together to help ensure that our Great Lakes are drinkable, swimmable and fishable.”
Ontario is helping communities protect their part of the Great Lakes through the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund which offers grants to grassroots community groups for activities such as cleaning up a beach or shoreline, restoring a wetland, or creating a costal or riverside trail.
