Superior-Greenstone DSB Elementary Schools Closed January 11, 2013 due to ETFO One-Day Political Protest Action
MARATHON, ON –The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), has advised Superior-Greenstone DSB that on Friday, January 11, 2013 it will stage a one-day Political Protest Action. As a result, all elementary schools of the Board will be closed. All secondary schools will remain open and school bus transportation will be provided as usual for high school students to attend their regular day classes.
“We sincerely regret this disruption for our students, however, we have a commitment to ensure the safety of our students throughout our system and we cannot do so in the absence of teachers in the classroom while the ETFO Political Protest Action Day takes place.” said David Tamblyn, Director of Education. “Parents are urged to make alternative arrangements for the care of their children on this day as the school will remain closed for the day,” he said.
Children in JK to grade eight who ride the school bus will not be picked up on Friday, January 11 and Tamblyn stressed that with student safety a priority, parents are asked not to drop off their JK to grade 8 children at the school on January 11 because there will not be adequate supervision available. Tamblyn noted that daycare programs located in the elementary schools are operated by a third party and these facilities will make their own determination as to whether or not they will be open. He advised parents to watch for specific announcements from the daycare where their children may attend.
“All elementary schools for Superior-Greenstone DSB are scheduled to reopen on Monday, January 14,” said Tamblyn. “We recognize that this is an inconvenience and are doing our best in this difficult provincial situation to minimize the disruption in our schools.” “We would like to thank our families for their patience and understanding during this event,” said Tamblyn.
