“IDLE NO MORE” DEMONSTRATIONS – HIGHWAY 11/LONG LAKE #58 FIRST NATION – HIGHWAY REOPENED WITHOUT INCIDENT
GREENSTONE, ON – On January 9, 2013 shortly after 1:00 pm (EST) “Idle No More” protest activities began on Highway 11 at Long Lake # 58 First Nation.
Police can confirm that protest activities remained peaceful but did interrupt the normal flow of traffic during the afternoon. At approximately 4:00 pm, OPP closed a section of Highway 11 to ensure public safety as protest participants moved onto the travelled portion of the roadway. As the event progressed through the day, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) worked with those involved to minimize the impact on the traveling public, ensure order and public safety and worked to restore the orderly flow of traffic in the safety manner possible.
Travelling motorists were alerted to the traffic disruptions through local media outlets. The highway was opened to one lane at 4:30 pm (EST) and was completely reopened at approximately 6:00 pm (EST) when the demonstration came to a peaceful conclusion.
The OPP and our partners appreciate everyone’s patience in dealing with traffic disruptions respectfully.
