“This committed funding is a good start, but we need to ensure that the province fully assists the municipality and businesses throughout this process, and does not leave Wawa and the surrounding communities unduly burdened with additional costs.” Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha
Disaster relief for Wawa welcomed, but falls short
ESPANOLA, ON – Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha made the following statement regarding the recently announced disaster relief funding for Wawa residents and businesses.
In the aftermath of last month’s flood disaster, I called on the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to deliver funds for disaster response and recovery under the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP). I am pleased that the province has finally committed nearly $7 million to help the flood damaged city of Wawa and surrounding communities.
“However as initial costs of repair are estimated at approximately $10 million, Mayor Nowicki and I are concerned that this funding will leave the city with a $3 million shortfall. Wawa and surrounding communities simply do not have the capacity to cover the high costs of rebuilding damaged infrastructure.
“This committed funding is a good start, but we need to ensure that the province fully assists the municipality and businesses throughout this process, and does not leave Wawa and the surrounding communities unduly burdened with additional costs.”
