Update on Office of the Chief Coroner’s ORNGE Review

Expert Panel Continues to Review Air Ambulance Files

An Expert Panel of the Office of the Chief Coroner is continuing to identify and review cases in which operational issues pertaining to air ambulance transport by ORNGE may have affected the patient’s outcome.

The Expert Panel, formed in August 2012, was established by the Patient Safety Review Committee and is being led by Dr. Craig Muir, Regional Supervising Coroner – Sudbury.  Chief Coroner Dr. Andrew McCallum initially expected the report to be complete in late fall 2012. However, the review process is taking longer than expected due to the large number of files that need to be reviewed in order to identify cases that merit further analysis.

The Office of the Chief Coroner will announce the completion of the report at a later date. The report will be made available to the public at that time.

” I want to acknowledge the ongoing assistance of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and ORNGE with this important review. They have demonstrated a high level of commitment to making sure the Expert Panel gets the information it needs to carry out this review.”Dr. Dan Cass, Deputy Chief Coroner – Investigations, Office of the Chief Coroner
