MUNICIPALITY OF WAWA – UPDATE 4
WAWA, ON – Managing a declared emergency of any kind is no easy task. It requires patience and understanding, and a combination of planning, “thinking on the fly” and above all, teamwork.
Wawa and area is blessed with a number of dedicated people who have come together three times in the past fourteen (14) months to manage declared emergencies. The emergency that was declared last Thursday evening developed into a second emergency as Wawa prepared itself to host our friends from Michipicoten First Nation.
Mayor Linda Nowicki stated; “I continue to be impressed by the level of resolve maintained by our dedicated Emergency Control Group. While our municipal staff and volunteer fire fighters play a large role in this process, its success would not be possible without the participation from our volunteers and fellow public sector agencies. All of these people have worked endless hours to ensure the comfort of our guests from Michipicoten First Nation and the repairs to our infrastructure.”
The Michipicoten First Nation and the Municipality of Wawa have worked hand in hand to ensure repairs to all infrastructure. Crews have been working on the roads within the Michipicoten First Nation and in Wawa. Mayor Nowicki went on to say that “the progress has been amazing. We also have to remember that these same crews have to ensure our streets remain safe and our remaining infrastructure and services continue without disruption. Without them, our community would shut down. Municipal Staff have worked very hard to ensure minimal disruption in service, even working from home where necessary, due to the road washouts.”
The Ontario Commissioner of Public Safety, Dan Hefkey, visited Wawa on Monday, October 29, 2012 and was impressed by the level of dedication of the Emergency Control Group. Mayor Nowicki noted that she “was very proud of our community, for pulling together in such a crisis.”
Keep up the good work Wawa!!
