OPP UPDATE 7 : WAWA – Area Road Closures
WAWA, ON – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment and the Municipality of Wawa advise that the State of Emergency continues for the Municipality.
At this time Highway 17 North bound from Wawa to White River continues to be closed. The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) advises that this portion of Highway 17 shall be reopened by late this afternoon. The OPP and MTO advise the motorists to drive with caution as the highway will have gravel sections and the weather has made the roadways hazardous to drive on.
The evacuation of the Michipicoten First Nation (MFN) continues to be in effect. Road work continues on the Harbour Road into the Michipicoten First Nation. The OPP are requesting that the public remain away from this area. This will allow the Municipality’s Public Works Department to work as quickly and as safely as possible. The Municipality advises that the finishing touches are being done on this road with new culverts being installed and gravel being put down.
Overnight several highways on the OPP Superior East area were closed due to road conditions. Currently Highway 631 from White River to Hornepayne and Highway 17 South bound from Wawa are open. The OPP urge all motorists to drive with care when driving in the area.
