Another Award for Schreiber Public Library!
By Neil Scott, SPL
SCHREIBER, ON – September 26th, at the Ontario Library Service (North) Conference, Schreiber Public Library added another award to its long list of achievements. An award for Leadership and Innovation recognized the library’s groundbreaking media streaming initiative.
In mid 2011, Schreiber Public Library CEO Donna Mikeluk, decided to improve the library’s social media presence with live streaming. The library had videos ready to broadcast and assessed the viability of launching a streaming channel. Following a successful grant application, Northern Computers in Terrace Bay provided the library with the hardware and expertise needed to make the idea a reality.
Starting with the 2012 Schreiber Winter Carnival, (re-broadcast by OntarioNewsNorth.com on the home page) the library set about documenting the life of Schreiber, its people, and its celebrations. Library videographer, Neil Scott, continues to be seen at many of the town’s events, video camera in hand ready to record everything as it happens.
From the hours of raw footage recorded short videos are edited together and streamed on the dedicated Schreiber Public Library channel. The library has steadily built on its first few videos and has been able to add to its collection with two outstanding photo essays documenting the life of local resident Edgar LeBlanc and another highlighting the history of the Japanese Relocation Camp located near Schreiber. The library has also uploaded these two videos to its YouTube channel, CLICK HERE to view.
The library encourages all everyone to visit its broadcast channel – CLICK HERE to do so. This innovative project will continue to capture life in our small town and show the world just how special our town is, OntarioNewsNorth.com is appreciative of the opportunity to give readers the experience of attending wonderful events taking place in Schreiber as we re-broadcast their channel on the home page when live streams are in progress.
October 14-20th marks 2012’s Ontario Public Library Week, theme is “Libraries Connect” a perfect opportunity for people to connect with your public library, and learn more about how YOUR library serves YOU!
