Annual Cardboard Boat Race Results, Marathon & Longlac Teams Top 3
MARATHON , ON – The annual Skills Canada-Ontario’s Cardboard Boat Race was this week at the Marathon Porthole Pool with fifteen schools from across the Northshore and Greenstone competing. Tuesday, October 23rd parents and friends came out in large numbers to welcome the students and cheer on competitor. Skills Canada-Ontario communications officer Anita Tomins described the event as a great success, “The support for this event in the community of Marathon was outstanding and the excitement of the students was almost palpable!”
The young athletes represented their schools very well as sportsmanship and fun appeared to be at the top of everyone’s agenda throughout the event. The Skills Canada-Ontario Cardboard Boat Race competition offers an interactive learning experience which challenges team members to collaborate in their problem solving and,utilizing trades-related abilities, teams apply their knowledge of mathematics, physics and design.
The following three teams emerged at the top with the highest combined scores for construction, speed and weight capacity:
- FIRST PLACE: Holy Saviour School, Team 1, Marathon
- SECOND PLACE: École Val des Bois, Marathon
- THIRD PLACE: Our Lady of Fatima Separate School, Longlac
Theses three top-ranking teams are invited to compete at the Provincial Championships, February 27, 2013.
Additional Elementary-level Cardboard Boat Races will be hosted simultaneously on January 29, 2013 in: Toronto • Ottawa • Thunder Bay • Sturgeon Falls • Sutton • Brantford
