SUPERIOR GREENSTONE DSB, ON – Students in High Schools across the Northshore including Nipigon-Red Rock District High School, Lake Superior High School, Marathon High School, and Manitouwadge High School joined those in secondary schools throughout Ontario this morning in peaceful protest of the passing of Bill 115.
In Manitouwadge, the entire student body walked from their school, at the southern entrance of town, following Manitou Road through town all the way past the Ontario Provincial Police station about 2km away. It would seem the public was in support of their cause as private and commercial vehicles honked while passing the students and their signs which read things like “Negotiation NOT Legislation”, “If you can read this, Thank a teacher” and “MHS Students Against Bill 115”.
MHS Grade 12 student Aaron MacGregor explained why they walked-out “We wanted to raise awareness of the attack on teachers’ rights to strike and work-to-rule in the negotiation process”. MacGregor elaborated adding that “Black Wednesday yesterday, with the teachers not doing any extra-curricular activities of any kind we wanted to let everybody know we support the teachers and are not too happy about their rights being taken away”.
Tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 14) Manitouwadge High School students have planned a noon-hour meeting with their peers to discuss the issues relating to the passing of Bill 115, answer questions and provide details of why they feel it important to vocalize their solidarity.
