MANITOUWADGE, ON – Saturday, August 18th the sun was shining as participants and spectators of the Charlie Side Amateur BBQ Cook-off  organized by the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Fighter Association gathered on KG’s (Bar & Lounge) rear lawn.

6 official entrants, of individual or paired amateur Grillmasters,  competed in a two-part cook-off for some incredible prizes and the title of Manitouwadge’s Champion Grillmaster 2012. Each individual or pair had 5 hours to prepare their barbecued pork ribs for judging by 3 volunteers.

Judges Carol Barnes, Randy Barnes and Vital Morin adjudicated two separate courses presented by the participating cooks. The first tasting, midway through the afternoon, was of the hors d’oeuvres. The would-be chefs presented their arbitrators with tasty treats as varied as they were delicious from sticky-grilled-corn on the cob to grilled shrimp and grilled chicken variations and many things in between. The judges had only numbers by which to identified the entries, ensuring their critiques would remain unbiased.  In the end it was the team of Helen and Fern Narbonne who presented a twist on barbecued shrimp who took the prize for best appetizer winning a ceramic knife set donated by Paul Cranney.
