NIPIGON, ON – July 25, 2012 at approximately 3:39am Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified of an attempted break and enter to a store in Shuniah Township. At 3:59am Nipigon OPP officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 11/17 west of Nipigon.
When Nipigon OPP officers attempted to stop the vehicle by activating their emergency lights the driver of the motor vehicle immediately accelerated and failed to stop. Nipigon OPP officers discontinued the pursuit for public safety reasons at the junction of Highway 11/17. The suspect vehicle continued to travel eastbound.
At 6:50am Nipigon officers observed the suspect vehicle traveling on Highway 17 in Pays Plat. Officers successfully deployed a spike belt as they observed the suspect vehicle approaching Schreiber. Once again the suspect vehicle accelerated and failed to stop for police. The vehicle subsequently came to rest near Walkers Lake road in Schreiber and the occupants ran from the vehicle.
Several hours later Nipigon OPP officers arrested two males in relation to the incident. One 26 year old male from Fredericton New Brunswick has been released unconditionally and the second male remains in custody.
A third male occupant of the vehicle remains outstanding. There is no description of the male available at this time but police would like to advise motorists not to pick up hitch-hikers on Highway #17 in the area of Schreiber.
An OPP K-9 Unit and members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) were dispatched to the scene and are currently searching for the third suspect in this incident.
The investigation is continuing.
