Sudbury Teen To Fly Solo Across Canada

SUDBURY, ON – A local teenager will attempt to become the youngest person ever to fly solo across Canada in an amphibious aircraft. On July 10th, Matt Gougeon (16) will be leaving from his hometown of Greater Sudbury to begin a cross-Canada flight that starts in Tofino, B.C. and ends in Halifax, N.S. Gougeon is raising money for the Neil J. Armstrong Scholarship Fund, an organization that provides flight training to underprivileged youth through the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA).

Gougeon will land in Sudbury, mid-way through his cross-Canada flight. Local residents and media are encouraged to gather at Science North on Wednesday, July 18th at 4 p.m. to meet Gougeon and hear updates about his solo flight. Regular updates from Gougeon will also be posted online, throughout the month of July, at sciencenorth.ca/flight.

Science North is proud to support Gougeon through the Students Doing Great Things in Science program. Gougeon will receive a $250 grant to go towards his fundraising efforts.
