MANITOUWADGE, ON – July 1st Manitouwadge residents celebrated Canada Day at the Lion’s Beach with music, games, a sand sculpture contestand other fun activities. Events were kicked off by Community Programmer Shawna Patterson who welcomed everyone before introducing Acting Mayor Sheldon Plummer who also welcomed those in attendance, thanked Patterson and her team for organizing the event. Young local artist Janelle Russard then lead those in attendance in singing Canada Day before the cake was cut and the fun officially began.
In addition to some incredible local entertainment Manitouwadge Community Services also had WhosArmy headlining the celebration AND judging the sand sculpture contest between sets. Many in the audience were excited to have the Toronto based band, recent winners on CBC’s Cover Me Canada and, in spite of intermittent rain throughout the day people stayed to enjoy there high energy performance. A BBQ by the Humane Society raised funds for their cause selling hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments while people also enjoyed the snow-cones and popcorn available to purchase.
Among the activities later in the evening were capture the flag, judging and prizes for the afforementioned Sand Sculpture Contest, giant bouncers which kept littler attendees busy for hours on end other games. Patterson thanked Barrick and the Manitouwadge Economic Development Corporation for their support of the festivities as well as staff and volunteers who helped make Manitouwadge’s 2012 Canada Day Celebrations such a success.
