MARATHON ON – Wednesday June 13, 2012, at 7:00 pm, Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers received information of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Marathon ON.
A Jeep Cherokee pulling a U-Haul trailer exited a gas station heading eastbound. A tractor trailer unit also heading eastbound crested a hill and observed the Jeep accelerating a slow rate of speed. After honking his horn the driver of the transport pulled into the westbound lane to avoid a rear end collision. However the driver of the Jeep attempted to move into the westbound lane at the same time. The transport collided with the driver’s side of the Jeep, pinning the driver in the vehicle. Marathon Fire department attended the scene and with the assistance of D&A Towing, were able to extricate the driver.
The driver of the Jeep, a 51 year old female from Penticton BC was transported to Wilson Memorial General Hospital in Marathon with non-life threatening injuries. She was later flown to Thunder Bay for further examination.
One lane of Highway 17 was closed during police investigation and there were no charges laid in the incident.
