SCHREIBER/NIPIGON OPP WEEKEND REVIEW June 1-3 2012

OPP INVESTIGATE MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION   

NIPIGON, ON – Saturday June 2, 2012 at 6:00 am, Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call of a single vehicle collision on Hwy 17, Township of Wiggins, west of Pays Plat First Nation.  The driver of an east bound car left the roadway and struck numerous guard posts on the south shoulder before coming to a stop.

The 76 year old male driver, George BROUGH of North Bay, Ontario, was transported by ambulance to McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay where he was pronounced deceased.  A post mortem examination will take place at the Thunder BayRegional Health Science Centre.  Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

Sunday June 3, 2012 Schreiber OPP investigated a motor vehicle collision that was reported at 5:25 a.m.  The driver of a stolen pick up truck struck a parked vehicle at a residence on Superior Street in the Town of Schreiber.  The male driver fled from the scene and was located a short time later by police.   The accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

A 20 year old male of Schreiber,Ontario, has been charged with Impaired Driving, Drive Motor Vehicle with more than 80 Milligrams of Blood Alcohol Content, Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code.  He is to appear in Schreiber Court on August 22, 2012 to answer to these charges.

Schreiber OPP with the assistance of the North West Region Crime Unit are currently investigating an assault that occurred on June 3, 2012 at approximately 7:50 a.m. at Pays Plat First Nation.  An altercation between two males resulted in one victim being transported by ambulance to McCausland Hospital for non life threatening injuries.  As a result, a 26 year old male of Pays Plat First Nation was arrested and has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, contrary to the Criminal Code.  The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing on June 4.  Police continue to investigate.

Schreiber OPP responded to a complaint of a bear wandering on resident’s property in the Town of Terrace Bay at approximately 15:55  June 3.  Officers attended the Superior Avenue and Lakeview Drive area.  After the bear lunged at a Terrace Bay resident and an officer, the bear was dispatched.  Feeding wild animals puts yourself, your property, and other residents at risk.  Police want to remind the public that for safety, ensure your garbage is stored properly and not to feed the wild animals.
