MANITOUWADGE, ON – Saturday, June 23rd the Township’s Community Services held Minnow Races at the Golf Course Parking Lot to assist in raising funds for the bus fares incured during a recent trip by youth to Goulais River’s Treetop Adventures (CLICK HERE for details/photos). Originally a drive-through BBQ & Car Wash had been organized to raise the funds prior to the youth’s travelling however this event had been rained out.
The Minnow Races were a huges success, organized by Community Programmer Shawna Patterson, people could rent their racing minnow at $5/ea, they raced in heats of 4, in lanes made of eaves trough. Some of the little fish were more enthusiastic about the competition than others and over the course of the day Patterson shared that the bigger minnows seemed to win more races than the smaller ones. It was all in good fun and those who purchased the minnows had a chance to double their money if their fish was the winner. By the 1/2 way point of the 4 hr event, more than 70 races had already taken place, and several of the kids who had travelled to Goulais River had stopped by to assist with the event.
Parent Volunteer Vickie Russard who had travelled with the group also spent the afternoon assisting the Community Programmer and offering face painting for a donation to the fundraiser. A BBQ was also held throughout the afternoon and it, and the races, were very well supported by golfers coming off the course from a Crimestoppers Tournament which was held the same day.
OntarioNewsNorth.com spoke with Community Programmer Shawna Patterson about the races and other events/programs residents of Manitouwadge can look forward to this summer, including the opening of the pool – see the interview by clicking play below. Patterson thanked all those who assisted with and supported the Races & BBQ and reminds everyone they won’t want to miss Canada Day celebrations at Lions’ Beach this Sunday, July 1st.
