CONGRATULATIONS BARRICK – HEMLO
62^nd ANNUAL ONTARIO MINE RESCUE COMPETITION CHAMPIONS!

SUDBURY, ON – Mine rescuers from Barrick-Hemlo earned the gold hard hats as the overall winners of the 62^nd annual Ontario Mine Rescue Competition June 8^th and 9^th.The Barrick-Hemlo team, comprised mainly of members of last year’s runner-up team, was the last but the best of seven district champions to compete in a simulated emergency over two days at Vale’s Copper Cliff Mine South Site.

During the exercise five-member teams had to extinguish a fire, find missing miners – including rescuing one being crushed by a rolling garage door and another overcome by smoke – and treat their injuries.  These rescues were conducted “under oxygen” (using self-contained rebreathing apparatus) underground. They also used rope apparatus to rescue a collapsed welder from a basket at the end of an elevated crane.
