Mayor McArthur Takes Leave From Council
SCHREIBER, ON – Schreiber’s Mayor Don McArthur, is taking a leave of absence to become town manager in Pickle Lake and has not yet established if or when he will return in his role as Mayor of Schreiber.
Don McArthur was acclaimed as Mayor in the 2010 municipal elections and has been quoted in the media as calling the six-month contract in Pickle Lake a “personal opportunity”.
McArthur beleives he can bring lessons learned by Schreiber to assist Pickle Lake with its challenges.
McArthur made the official announcement to council at their regular meeting Tuesday.
“I am extremely proud of the work our council, management and staff has accomplished over the past year and a half together,” said McArthur “We have tackled the considerable financial challenges head on and have made significant progress that will benefit Schreiber for years to come.”
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mark Figliomeni, acts as interim Mayor of Schreiber for the time being.
The current term runs until the end of November, 2014.
Before becoming mayor in 2010, McArthur managed Terrace Bay’s job action centre for 18 months after the mill in that town shut down. McArthur has said he will continue to operate the restaurant and gas station he owns in Schreiber while working as Pickle Lake’s town manager.
This was not McArthur’s first term as Mayor, he also served the community in this position between 2003 and 2006; running for the Liberals in the 2008 federal election which he lost to current independent MP Bruce Hyer (Hyer served as an NDP until recently becoming an independent).
