Mantha says Province must come clean on Ring of Fire discussions
QUEEN’S PARK, ON – Northern Development and Mines Critic and Algoma–Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha called on the government to release details of their discussions with Cliff Resouces on the Ring of Fire and to ensure all the resources mined from the site are refined in Ontario .
“Cliffs Resources is expected to make an announcement this week about the Ring of Fire, following closed door discussions with the Ontario government.
“A number of First Nations like Aroland, Marten Falls and Webequie are concerned that they’ve been excluded from this process. I hope the minister would agree that for the Ring of Fire to work for everyone, First Nations can’t be put on the sidelines.
“Will the minister explain the status of discussions with Cliffs and whether any commitments have been made to date?
“Although Cliffs Resources may build a processing facility in northern Ontario, the company has indicated it may only partially process ore here, shipping the semi-processed ore overseas to China.
“If our communities are going to get the most out of the Ring of Fire potential we need resources mined in Ontario to stay in Ontario.
“Will this government make sure that all the resources mined in the Ring of Fire are processed in Ontario?”
