A Manitouwadge man has been fined $150 for harvesting fuel wood without a permit.

The court heard that on October 21, 2011, Ed Dongres was harvesting wood along the Caramat Industrial Road near Manitouwadge that he intended to use for fuel. When contacted by a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer, he insisted that he did not need a fuel wood permit because the wood he was taking was only scrap wood and tops left by a forest company. The conservation officer gave Dongres the opportunity to buy a fuel wood permit, but he declined.

The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Liette Hunter in the Ontario Court of Justice, Marathon, on May 15, 2012.

The public is reminded that under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, anyone who harvests a forest resource in a Crown forest requires a permit or authorization. Fuel wood permits can be purchased at local Ministry of Natural Resources offices. For a list of offices, please visit ontario.ca/mnroffices.
