Students from Confederation’s First Pre-Service Firefighter Program Secure Full-Time Positions with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue

THUNDER BAY, ON – Representatives of Confederation College and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue announced that six students from the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program were offered probationary firefighter positions with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

The program began in the fall of 2011.  The curriculum is designed to provide academic preparation to candidates that wish to pursue a career in the fire service field.

“The success of this program is largely due to the dedication and experience of the instructors, supervising managers, and the commitment of the students,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Chief John Hay.

“The development of the program is just an example of how Confederation College has been responsive to the needs of the community and the region,” says President of Confederation College, Jim Madder. “This, along with the program’s well rounded education and training, has significantly contributed to the success of our students securing employment in the fire service field.”

“I am very happy to see that this program, which has only been running since the fall, has been so successful,” says Joe Cordeiro, Associate Dean Health and Community Services. “Congratulations to all of our students.”

The Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program is delivered in partnership with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, the City of Thunder Bay’s Fire Department and Confederation College.

Today’s announcement also showcased students taking part in fire training including search and rescue and situational simulations.
