TRAFFIC STOP YESTERDAY BY MARATHON OPP LEADS TO MONEY SEIZURE
MARATHON, ON – Sunday April 22, 2012 an officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle travelling on Highway 17 in Marathon Township, in the District of Thunder Bay. During the traffic stop, investigation revealed that the driver had warrants outstanding from Southern Ontario. The male was arrested and during a search of the motor vehicle, a large sum of Canadian currency, approximately $30,000.00, was located inside the vehicle.
The officers interviewed the two male occupants in the vehicle regarding the large sum of money and neither offered information regarding the money or where they obtained it. As a result the money was seized pending further investigation.
The driver Sven KALEP, 39 year old male from Bear River, Nova Scotia was charged with speeding and driving while suspended. The other occupant was released unconditionally.
The accused will return to Provincial Offences court on June 12, 2012 to answer to the Suspended driving charge.
