Michael Mantha Congratulates Constituent On $80,000 Undergraduate Merit Scholarship
Mantha: Tristan Emiry wins prestigious Loran Award
QUEEN’S PARK, ON– Today in the Legislature, Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha congratulated Tristan Emiry of Thessalon for winning one of Canada’s largest undergraduate merit scholarships, the Loran Award. In addition to the scholarship funds, an incredible $80 000 to pursue his undergraduate studies when Emiry graduates from Espanola High School this June, the Loran Award also includes a comprehensive enrichment and mentoring program.
“I am proud that one of my constituents is among just 30 students from across Canada to receive this award,” said Mantha.
Tristan has been an active student, as the Prime Minister of the Student Parliament for the past two years as well as Deputy Prime Minister in Grade 10. Tristan spearheaded the Spread the Net campaign in his high school with impressive results, leading to his school being featured on the Rick Mercer Report as the top fundraising high school in Canada for the Spread the Net Challenge last year (2011).
This year the school, with Tristan’s leadership, tripled its donations raising over $31,000 for bed nets to help protect children in Africa from malaria. And Rick Mercer Congratulated the teen once again, tweeting well wishes in regards to Tristan being named the first Youth Ambassador for Spread the Net April 7th
“Congratulations to @spreadthenet ambassador Tristan Emiry – big big winner. Much deserved http://tinyurl.com/7xhg855” Tweeted Mercer [ @RickMercer ]
As Youth Ambassador for Spread the Net, Emiry will work along side celebrities, including Hayley Wickenheiser, Seamus O’Regan and others to raise funds for the cause. The article Mercer linked to in Sudbury’s Northern Times also reports that Emiry was at the March 30th taping of the Rick Mercer Report show.
“Tristan has earned the respect and admiration of many in his school and community, and I want to pass along my congratulations and best wishes for him in the future” added Mantha.
An all-round student, Tristan Emiry is a member of the basketball, cross-country, curling, track, and soccer teams at Espanola High School. He qualified for OFSAA (Ontario Federation of Secondary Athletic Associations) cross-country in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and was a member of the senior boys’ basketball team that qualified for OFSAA in 2011. He is also on the Espanola High School Reach for the Top team, which was this year’s Sudbury District Champions. In addition, he is a leader in his local 4-H Club and an accomplished pianist.
“I am very excited to have won the award and I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities I have been given at Espanola High School,” said Tristan Emiry. “It’s an incredible school and I will really miss being a Spartan.” Tristan plans to study Economics at McGill University or Agricultural Economics or Animal Science at the University of Guelph.
