Letter to the Editor: RE:Katimavik being cut -from participant in Manitouwadge
Letter to the Editor In response to Katimavik’s funding being cut:
I participated in Katimavik in 2008 in Manitouwadge, ON. My placement was at the Manitouwadge General Hospital where I worked in the physiotherapy department and planned activities for the long term care patients. I learned how diligently and delicately nurses care for their patients day in and day out.
Manitouwadge exposed me to the beauty and lifestyle of northern Canada, as well as the generous and caring people that inhabit it. Through my participation in Katimavik, I discovered my passion for agriculture, and am now studying Organic Agriculture at the University of Guelph. My goal is now to teach secondary school horticulture or agriculture and start a school garden.
Katimavik also inspired me to take a more active role in my community and fight for what I really believe in. I had hoped to work for Katimavik once I complete my university degree so I was extremely disappointed to see the funding cut. I hope that those that believe in the program will fight for funding so the program can continue to inspire, create leaders, and benefit communities around Canada.
Sincerely, Lisa Hanlon Nelson, BC
