"The Hospital is pleased with the quality of service our Health Record and Reception Department discharge their important duties and we thank them for it." Jocelyn Bourgoin, CEO Manitouwadge General Hospital
MANITOUWADGE, ON – This week is Health Information Professionals (HIM) Week in Canada. At Manitouwadge General Hospital, our HIM is really a she named Teresa Malakoff who leads a small team including Shannon Martin and Alyson Corriveau in providing Health Information and Reception services to the Hospital.
Health Information Management professionals provide leadership in all aspects of clinical information management at both the micro and macro levels. At the micro (or individual record level) HIM professionals support data collection, use, access and disclosure, to the retention and destruction of health information regardless of format. HIM professionals perform qualitative analysis on the documentation within the health record and are responsible for the security of health records. HIM professionals are advocates of the individual’s right to private, secure and confidential health information. At the macro (or aggregate data level), HIM professionals deal with the information through the health system, analyze statistics, manage complex information systems including registries and work with public, private and key stakeholders in understanding and using health data to improve the health of Canadians.
This is an exciting time for HIM professionals as we all transition from the paper health record to the electronic health record (EHR). Teresa is a key person involved with IT in the training and management of EHR at the hospital. She also coordinates privacy services for all the departments. HIM are often taken for granted as they often work in the background, but ensuring quality information is available to the medical staff on time to make accurate clinical decisions is a key component of quality health care delivery.
The Hospital is pleased with the quality of service our Health Record and Reception Department discharge their important duties and we thank them for it.
