Family Literacy Day 2012 at St. Martin School
FAMILY LITERACY DAY
TERRACE BAY, ON – The afternoon of January 27, 2012 the students, staff, and parents of St. Martin School celebrated Family Literacy Day.
The afternoon began with our Librarian, Marylyn Turcotte reading “The Good Samaritan” to staff, students, and parents. The students’ then moved into their new ‘School Families’ and travelled to a station where the staff leader led the students and their families in creating handprints demonstrating what they can do to be more like Jesus. Following this activity we re-assembled for the next story, “Paulie Pastrami Saves the World”, read aloud to the group by mother, Kathie Shermack. Afterwards the students re-assembled within their families to decorate a paper cupcake to show what they could do to save (or help) the world; as Paulie Pastrami saved the world one cupcake at a time. As students completed their individual masterpieces it was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, cooperation, and creativity present at each table and within each family. Upon the completion of the activity the students, staff, and visitors were treated to tasty cupcakes prepared and decorated by staff and parents. We concluded the afternoon with a read-aloud of “How Full is your Bucket?”; each story read aloud surrounded the central theme of St. Martin School that consistently asks us the question What would Jesus do?.
All students were entered in a draw for a Reading Basket and we congratulate Kade Mitchics who was the lucky winner!!
A Love of Reading is definitely alive and can be seen by the Helping Hands tree, surrounded by a multitude of delicious cupcakes, that adorns the stage of St. Martin School.
