Collaborations and Goodbyes at MPS
Manitouwadge Public School News
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Ms. Capy’s classroom has been working hard recently in spite of the fact that they had to say good-bye to one of their classmates this week – as we see them here enjoying a cupcake / farewell moment in the classroom. But that hasn’t deterred them from working hard toward the Blue Shoes Project – A Lesson on Collaboration.
The class participated in a social experiment on the student character trait of the month for January which was collaboration. The goal seemed simple, to create as many blue shoes as possible with your group. The catch was that each group received a different amount of resources to make the shoes. Groups were permitted to trade supplies with other groups in order to get what they needed to make the shoes. However, the groups that had many resources often failed to trade with the other groups that were lacking in resources (even though they had more than what they needed). The end result was the groups that lacked resources were still successful in creating blue shoes as long as they traded supplies. The messages of the experiment were as follows;
- Students were successful if they collaborated (worked together to achieve the goal) within their own group.
- Students were successful if they traded supplies/ collaborated with other groups.
- The world is full of countries that are both rich and poor in resources, but we are all connected as a part of the greater community – the one of humanity. 🙂
Wow! What a lesson for young people – and adults to live by.
