Northern Ontario MP Carol Hughes Endorses Ashton for Leader
ASHTON ANNOUNCES ANOTHER CAUCUS ENDORSEMENT
Carol Hughes, NDP MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapusasking has endorsed Niki Ashton to be the next Leader of Canada’s NDP.
“I’m proud to endorse my friend and colleague, Niki Ashton to be the next leader of our party, and the first NDP Prime Minister of Canada,” said Hughes. “Niki understands parts of the country like mine, and I believe that she best understands the challenges of families in Northern Ontario. She understands that to build an NDP government we need to win seats in rural and northern regions that are being taken for granted by Stephen Harper.”
Hughes also pointed to Ashton’s bilingualism as a critical skill needed in the next leader. “Niki Ashton is bilingual and understands the diversity of our country, from working with Aboriginal peoples to new Canadians.”
“I truly appreciate receiving Carol’s support,” said Ashton. “Carol Hughes is a hard-working MP, a passionate advocate for the communities in her riding and a leading voice in our caucus for the people of rural and northern Canada. I look forward to working together to build an NDP Government that represents all Canadians.”
Ashton announced that, as part of her visit to Northern Ontario on the weekend of February 3-5, she and Hughes will be visiting Espanola, Elliott Lake and other communities in the riding of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. “ I’m looking forward to learning firsthand the concerns of families, seniors, First Nations and others in rural and Northern Ontario—people who, like so many others across the country, are being ignored by the Harper government.”
Carol Hughes is the fourth NDP caucus member to endorse Ashton for Leader. Other endorsements include Repentigny MP Jean-Francois LaRose, Joliette MP Francine Raynault and Drummond MP Francois Choquette. She has also been endorsed by Manitoba Deputy Premier Eric Robinson, nine other Manitoba MLAs, numerous community leaders and BC NDP MLA Guy Gentner.
