OPP WARN RESIDENTS AGAINST PHONE SCAM

WAWA, ON – December 6, 2011 a local Wawa resident reported receiving a fraudulent phone call the day before.  The caller identified himself as the elderly complainant’s grandson and provided the proper name.  The male suspect told him that he was in jail in Quebec and needed $1700.00 cash sent to him via Western Union.  A second call was received from another male suspect claiming to be the grandson’s lawyer and identified himself as Patrick Wilson.  Fortunately no money was sent and the complainant was able to contact his grandson and confirm that the phone call was a scam.

The Ontario Provincial Police Superior East Detachments would like to remind everyone not to give personal information over the phone or to send money to anyone without confirming the caller’s identity and the validity of the information being provided.

If you suspect that someone you know has been a victim of a scam encourage them to report the incident to their local police service, for OPP please call 1-888-310-1122.
